Behind the name
The name Ayla Bear is inspired by my long-standing appreciation for Jean M. Auel’s books, the Earth's Children series - particularly The Clan of the Cave Bear, a beautiful Ice Age story about a skilled healer and medicine woman named Ayla.
My beloved white canine companion also happens to be named Bear.
My story
I grew up on a sheep and arable farm in the UK, where my love for nature began, and walking in the woods has always been one of my greatest joys. Years as a chef deepened my appreciation for plants and their healing qualities - a passion I now bring to eco-printing in Greyton, South Africa. Here, our botanicals are outstanding and worthy of being imprinted!
I use natural dyes and seasonal, local plants on sustainably sourced silk, linen and cotton to create textiles and wearable pieces that reflect the colours and forms of the land.
I discovered eco-printing by chance and was instantly drawn to the process - being outdoors, gathering plants, and watching their imprints appear on fabric. It’s a craft that continues to teach me, and one I see as a lifelong journey.
